The history of sunglasses also known as UV-filters goes back to ancient times. Though, they weren’t sunglasses back then, as humanity hadn’t invented the technology of glass production. Officially, the invention of sunglasses dates back to 1752. Then, a young and ambitious scientist named James Ayscough created blue lenses able to filter orange and yellow rays, the brightest ones of the entire visible specter. Still, his invention never became popular, as he was lucky to sell only two exemplars.

The mass production of sunglasses began in 1798, when Napoleon Bonaparte was preparing for his Egypt raids and decided to equip an army with special eye lenses. Within the next 150 years, sunglasses were being used by military, especially aviation pilots of WWI who also needed to protect their eyes from bright sunrays in the sky.

In 1929, two things happened and turned the history of sunglasses. At first, Sam Foster and his company FosterGrant made this accessory item affordable for most people due to its cheap price. At second, Edwin Land, the head of “Polaroid” company, demonstrated the first sunglasses with polarization effect lenses. The product of the future guaranteed UV-protection of eyes.
